University of Oslo PhD Research Fellowship in Political Science

Apply for the University of Oslo PhD Research Fellowship in Political Science in Norway. The Department of Political Science at the University of Oslo invites applicants to fill two vacant positions for PhD Research Fellowships (SKO 1017) with a 25% teaching requirement for a period of four years. In the Department, teaching is organized into five sections namely:

  • Public policy and administration,
  • Comparative politics,
  • Political theory, international politics,
  • Research methods.

The successful applicants will work as PhD Fellows on the project titled: ResilienceBuilding – Social Resilience, Gendered Dynamics, and Local Peace in Protracted Conflicts. The program is funded by the European Research Council. If selected, you will be part of the Faculty’s PhD programme, and the your work will be expected to earn you a PhD in Political Science.

The content of the program/ project will involve investigating the causes and consequences of social resilience in protracted armed conflicts, with a focus on Nigeria, Central African Republic, South Sudan and Kenya. It asks how civilians and communities develop social resilience. This will also look at ways of adapting to conflict dynamics in ways that prevent or mitigate violence, how they maintain resilience and prevent renewed vulnerability to conflict re-escalation, and how social resilience impacts peacebuilding and development.

Further more, the project will also focus on interlinking national and local dynamics of communal conflict and civil war to study the potential and limitations of international and local peacebuilding efforts and barriers to sustainable peace.

For consideration for the program, you must meet the following conditions

  • You must have achieved a Master’s degree in political science or closely related discipline.
  • For consideration, your prior education must be equivalent of five years at the university level in Norway in a relevant field, with two years with a total of at least 120 credits at the master’s level.
  • You must demonstrate excellent oral and written English language skills since your PhD thesis will be written in English.
  • Applicants must have the ability to work independently, with confidence to work in a team,
  • You must have the willingness to contribute to administrative and organizational project tasks, such as the organization of workshops, conferences, and other research and outreach collaborations.
  • Applicants will be required to submit topics studied in Resilience Building in relation to one or more of the country case studies of Nigeria, Central African Republic, South Sudan, Kenya.

  • You must submit a cover letter statement of motivation and research interests, explaining why the candidate is well prepared for pursuing this PhD project
  • Applicants must submit a PhD research plan worth a maximum of3000 words
  • Your most recent CV detailing your education, previous positions, academic and other relevant work
  • You must also include a Copy of the Master’s dissertation
  • Applicants must submit their copies of transcripts and diploma for their Master’s degree preferably and if applicable, together with a class distribution of grades.
  • An official explanation of the grading and credit system at your university translated into ECTS-credits.
  • You must submit names and contact details for two reference persons to recommend your application
