The International Bar Association (IBA) Legal Internship Programme

Applications for the Legal Paid Internship at the International Bar Association (IBA) offices are now open to eligible applicants. The International Bar Association (IBA) was founded in 1947 and is currently the world’s largest organization of law societies, bar associations, law firms and individual lawyers from all around the world. The International Bar Association usually deals with issues affecting the international legal community

These Intern positions are available for undergraduate law students, postgraduate law students, and newly qualified lawyers at three International Bar Association’s offices namely London, The Hague and Washington DC. As an intern you can become involved in the work of the Association and get first hand overview of the inner workings and roles of the IBA which include the following

  • Promoting the status and independence of the profession
  • Bringing lawyers together to exchange information and to discuss matters of mutual concern
  • They Promote the administration of justice under the rule of law
  • IBA promotes human rights all across the spectrum

If you are selected as an intern for this program ,you will assist the IBA in developing academic papers and research on key legal topics of both local and international relevance and involve your self in the work of the following aspects of the Association:

  • Some interns will support the IBA’s Human Rights Institute in London
  • Interns will support the IBA’s Legal Policy & Research Unit in London
  • supporting the IBA’s ICC and ICL Programme (in The Hague)
  • Interns will support the IBA’s North America office (in Washington DC)

Benefits

Selected applicants for the IBA Traineeship program will receive the following benefits

  • For applicants in London, the IBA Educational Trust is granting funding of up to a maximum of £3,000 each to students who would not otherwise be able to take up the position due to financial constraints.
  • Interns in The Hague are also eligible for grants from the IBA Educational Trust. The maximum possible grant is €755 per month.
  • Applicants must note that priority will be given to applicants from developing countries although other applicants will be considered.
Eligibility

In order to apply, you must full fill the following application conditions:

  • Applicants must be either an undergraduate or postgraduate law student, or a newly qualified lawyer. You must have completed a minimum of 1 year of the degree.
  • Interns generally are usually from 20 to 35 years old, however, there is no minimum or maximum age limit.
  • Applicants from all over the world are welcome to apply
  • Selected applicants for an intern position by the IBA must be able to fulfill the visa requirements for the destination country

Interested applicants must submit the following documents to the respective IBA Internship programme office addresses

  • A Covering letter detailing the information below
    • You must explain why you wish to be considered for an intern position
    • Applicants must indicate clearly dates you would be able to take up your position
    • You should also specific research experience and areas of law that you are interested in
  • Your most recent Curriculum Vitae (CV / resume)
  • A fully completed application form for your selected internship, to be download from the internship website
  • Applicants must include a Letter of reference from an academic tutor or employer mentioning their academic background, personality and suitability for the internship programme.
