The European Master Of Science In Food Science, Technology And Business (BIFTEC) is a joint degree offered by four European partner universities jointly namely KU Leuven, Ghent Technology Campus, Universidade Católica Portuguesa in Porto, Anhalt University of Applied Sciences and University College Dublin that have committed themselves to each offering part of the curriculum. The main aim of the programme is to foster and develop knowledge and awareness of scientific trends and health issues in food science, technology and business in a global context. As one of the programme’s core goals, the course seeks to enhance student’s professional competence in areas such as safety, management and ethics.
BiFTec-FOOD4S adopts a transversal and multidisciplinary approach to a broad range of topics related to the 4S pillars Science (Food Science & Engineering Technology), Sustainability (Sustainable Food Product & Food Process Design), Safety (Food Safety & Quality), and Simulation (Computational Food Science & Technology). Students will have the opportunity to study for different potions of their course at the four participating universities
The programme accepts applications from students who are citizens of Partner countries as well as Programme countries. 12 scholarships per intake in general category are offered to applicants from Partner countries, 8 scholarships per intake may be granted to students from following Western Balkans (Region 1), ENI East (R2) , ENI South (R3), Asia (R6), Central Asia (R7), Latin America (R8), South Africa (R10), ACP countries (R11). 3 scholarships per intake are dedicated to programme countries
Benefits
The programme offers several Erasmus Mundus scholarships, awarded to top ranked students and scholars during the years 2021 and 2024.
Under this Erasmus+ framework student grants programme, you will be awarded a scholarship either as an applicant from a top ranked Partner Country or from a Programme Country.
- As a scholarship recipient, you will receive a travel contribution worth 2,000 euro per year if you are from a partner country and are less than 4000 km from your home, or 1,000 euro if you are form a programme country
- Students from partner countries who are more that 4000 km will receive a travel contribution worth 3,000 euro
- You will receive a contribution to the EMJMD participation costs worth 8,000 euro per year for partner countries and 4,000 euros for programme countries co cover tuition fee, insurance coverage and other related costs
- Scholarship recipients will receive a study allowance worth 1,000 euro per month for the whole length of the programme
Eligibility
You must be a national of a country in Erasmus regions R1, R2, R3, R6, R7, R8, R10 or R11, a student from a Partner country or a student from a Programme country (Please see full list here).
The programme is open to Non-EU graduates as well as EU graduates who intend to follow and develop their careers in food science, technology and business.
Certain modules of the course are also available to qualified persons in the workplace, who wish to gain new insights and knowledge. Applicants must posses a Bachelor of Science degree in a relevant area of studies qualifying them for admission into a Master degree programme.
You must have sufficient English language proficiency with the following qualifications
- TOEFL 600 with Test of Written English at 475+
- iBT 90 with a score of at least 20 in each section
- IELTS score 6.5 with no sub-score below 6.0
- English language examinations Cambridge English-Advanced (CAE)
- Cambridge English-Proficiency (CPE): 176+ on Cambridge English scale with no less than 169 in each skill and use of English

Please remember that you will be required to request at least two recommendation letters with at least one of the referees coming from the university of origin. These recommendation letters should not be uploaded via the web application but should be sent directly by the referee to the programme email address .
